Truth is we - the scientific community and government organisations – have got it wrong and are being too slow to address this. Moving more and eating less doesn’t lead to weight loss else it would have worked by now. If you focus on a restrictive diet or exercise without improving your gut health, sleep and stress, you are probably going to fail and feel miserable.

For many of my patients, the perimenopause has pulled the rug from under their feet, they feel fat, bloated, anxious and exhausted with brain fog to boot, a shadow of their former selves. Most women gain an average of 10Kg in the perimenopause/menopause. Due to our changing hormones, this is often stored in deep our abdomen as visceral fat. This fat is metabolically active and increases our insulin resistance and inflammation causing a viscous cycle of weight gain, fatigue and risk of multiple chronic diseases.

This isn’t inevitable but we do need to rethink the challenge and understand that there is unfortunately no one size fits all approach.
